Thank you for your interest in the Graham County School system. We value the cooperative working relationship that we have with Substitute Teachers and realize that it takes us all to provide a instructional-rich education environment for our students.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES BELOW TO FILE AN APPLICATION:

PREREQUISITE SKILLS:

As a new applicant for substitute teaching in the Graham County School system, it is required that you possess or build a set of skills for handling classroom management and effective teaching strategiesAll applicants must hold a high school diploma at a minimum. New applicants (Prior to completing an Instructional Substitute Application) must complete the ON SITE Substitute Training class at Graham County Schools or must already hold a Teaching Degree . (If you hold a current teaching license in the state of North Carolina; or hold a current teaching license from a state that has reciprocity with the state of North Carolina; or after you have successfully completed your student teaching experience with Graham County Schools, you are exempt from the online training course requirement.)

NEXT STEPS:

1.Once you have completed the ON Site Substitute Training class, please bring your certificate to Kim Beasley, at GCS Central Office ALONG WITH the completed application documents. (If you are a licensed teacher, please attach transcripts and teaching license):  Substitute Teacher Application

2. After the receipt of the completed Application Forms above, the receipt of the Principal recommendation letter and a successful background check, your application will be submitted to the Superintendent for placement on the Board of Education agenda for approval at the next monthly Board of Education meeting.

3. Once approved by the Board of Education and prior to your first paid day, you will be required to pass a Drug Screen and attend a Substitute Teaching Orientation class, which includes Critical Incident training, Bloodborne Pathogens/Diabetes training and a general orientation to the system.

4.SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS ARE ONLY VOTED ON BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IN AUGUST AND JANUARY. APPROVED SUBSTITUTES WILL BE CHOSEN FROM THE POOL OF CANDIDATES.

NOTE: SUBSTITUTES ARE CHOSEN FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR ONLY, ENDING THE LAST STUDENT DAY OF THE YEAR. ALL SUBSTITUTES WHO WISH TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT CALENDAR YEAR WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A "REFRESHER COURSE" PRIOR TO THE START DATE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE TO ATTEND THE REFRESHER COURSE, YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ON THE SUBSTITUTE LIST. Graham County Schools will offer 2 optional dates for the Refresher Course over the summer. Please check this website for actual dates- to be announced by June.
